Lichen sclerosus: what to expect from a homeopathic consultation

2 min read

Early on in developing an interest in skin conditions I had several patients come to me in a short space of time with Lichen Sclerosus. I delved deep into understanding the condition, and how people were being supported.

Why people come to see me

Often people who come to see me have seen their doctor and been told they probably have Lichen Sclerosus. For most of them it is a very uncomfortable condition, causing embarrassing itching and either pain during sex, or some find they are no longer able to have sex at all.

They tell me of their frustrations around treatment and their concerns about using steroid creams in such a delicate area. I encourage them to raise these with their GP or specialist, and to keep using their prescribed treatment. They are also often frightened by the prospect of it developing into something more serious.

What I ask about

A first appointment lasts 90 minutes. I ask about:

  • your symptoms, in as much detail as you are comfortable giving

  • your diagnosis and the treatment you are using

  • your general, hormonal and family health history

  • sleep, diet, stress and what has been happening in your life

You can say as much or as little as you like. Everything is confidential.

How this fits with your medical care

Homeopathy sits alongside your medical care. Keep using your prescribed treatment and keep your check-ups with your GP or specialist. If you notice any change in your skin, such as a lump, a change in skin texture, or an ulcer, see your doctor promptly.

What happens after the first appointment

I analyse your case and provide a prescription for you to fill at a homeopathic pharmacy. We meet again after four to six weeks to review, and you decide at each stage whether to continue.

Questions I am often asked

  • Do I have to stop my steroid ointment? No. Never stop prescribed treatment without speaking to your doctor.

  • Is it embarrassing to talk about? Hopefully you won't find talking to me about these things embarrassing. People usually find it easy to talk to me about things they may have never discussed with anyone else before.

  • Can we do this by video? Yes. As a homeopath I don't need to see you in person, I just need you to be able to describe what your skin looks like and the signs and symptoms that you have.

  • What does it cost? Fees are on The Practical Bits page.

If you would like to know more about how I work with people with lichen sclerosus, you can read more on my Lichen Sclerosus page. When you are ready, you can book a 15 minute introduction or a first appointment on my booking page.
